Barkcloth is a renewable material harvested from the bark of the Mutuba tree, an East African fig. Carefully peeled without harming the tree, the bark is wrapped and sealed, allowing it to regenerate and heal naturally. This unique textile, with its woven-like structure, forms the foundation of the artwork. Using traditional leathering techniques, Tink intricately hole-punches abstract designs into the material, which is then framed and backlit, demonstrating a seamless collaboration between nature and technology.
This body of work was created during her residency at The Safari Series in Kenya, where the landscape, wildlife, and community profoundly influenced her artistic vision.
